A polka dot dress is a cheerful summer classic for girls. This one has frilled armholes, which look sweet but need careful measuring and soft elastic so that the dress stays comfortable. These notes cover the main steps.

Measure and mark

Mark the future positions of the armholes equally on the front and the back. Every child’s body is different, so measure each child individually instead of relying on a standard size.

Attach the frills and add elastic

After attaching the frills, use a very light, soft elastic. The armholes should be neither loose nor narrow: the child’s arm must move easily. If the elastic is too tight it will leave marks, and if it is too loose the frill will droop.
If you wish, you can also make the frills from lace, tulle or another fabric. It is entirely up to your taste.

Strong seams on stretchy fabric
Always use clear (silicone) elastic on flexible fabrics. Otherwise the seams can snap when the child moves, or open in the wash.

Sew a very small zigzag at the seam ends so that the seams do not open.
