Crepe Tunic and Trouser Set: An Easy-Care Outfit to Sew

A tunic and trouser set in crepe is comfortable, drapes beautifully and hardly needs ironing. It is a good project for sewists who want a practical outfit that looks smart without effort. Both plain and patterned crepe fabrics work well.

Why crepe?

Crepe has a slightly crinkled surface that resists creasing, so the clothes stay fresh after washing and wear and need little or no ironing. It drapes softly and feels light on the body, which is why it suits tunics and relaxed trousers.

Sewing tips

  • Use a fine needle (70/10 or 80/12) and a slightly shorter stitch to avoid puckered seams.
  • Crepe can slip when cutting. Pin within the seam allowance or use pattern weights.
  • Finish the seams with an overlocker, zigzag stitch or French seams, because crepe frays.
  • Let the garment hang for a day before hemming so the fabric can relax.
