Leather and Faux Leather Coat with a Zip-In Lining

A coat in leather or vinyl (faux leather) is a long-lasting seasonal piece. Faux leather is a cruelty-free alternative that is also easier to sew and care for. These notes show how a coat can be made wearable in more than one season.

Seasonal coat in leather and vinyl

A coat for several seasons

The coat is made of leather and vinyl, a seasonal combination that works well for autumn and spring.

Coat with zip-in lining

Add an extra zipper to the inner lining so that it can be attached for winter and removed for summer. This way one coat can be worn through much of the year.

Coat with a fur hat

A fur hat is a warm match for the coat in winter.

Sewing tips for leather and vinyl

  • Use a leather or denim needle and a longer stitch, because each hole is permanent.
  • Pin only inside the seam allowance, or use clips, so you do not leave marks.
  • Use a Teflon or walking foot so the material does not stick to the presser foot.
  • Never press directly with a hot iron. Use a pressing cloth and low heat, or finger-press seams.
